Reinstating the first floor viewing gallery, previously in-filled for office space, created a dramatic, cathedral-like space with dark-wood rafters and many unique original details like the climbing hooks in the ceiling and cast steel columns. Warm, walnut-shade wood was called for to offset the black and grey distressed upholstery, with the occasional use of pink and red for depth and contrast.
Building History
This imposing building located between King’s Cross and St Pancras stations in London was designed by Edward Gruning for the German Gymnastic Society. It was England’s first purpose-built gym and hosted the indoor events at London’s first Olympic Games in 1866. Part of the newly invigorated King’s Cross master plan, the Grade II listed building was transformed into a Bauhaus version of a European Grand Café by designers Conran and Partners for the international restaurant group D&D London.
