O'Brien's Lane Residence, Victoria

Seeking an interior that functioned as a peaceful retreat from the outside world and which made the most of the property’s lush garden views, the project brief called for exquisite attention to detail in order to create a sense of ‘resort living’ – a hushed haven tucked away from the humdrum of everyday life.

Inspired by the tranquil gardens surrounding the residence, interior designer Patricia La Torre incorporated a number of inventive solutions in order to open up the existing kitchen/dining space and maximise the outstanding external views. Existing structural beams were re-engineered to raise the original bulkhead so as to flood the space with natural light while fixed obstructions were cleverly concealed with beautiful oak shelving.

The clients’ biggest priority was the quality and durability of the timber flooring used – with two energetic greyhounds, a strong, resilient surface was key. Ultimately deciding on Venture Plank Medio, the timber planks are manufactured specifically for strength and optimal wear resistance, with the added benefit of vibrant, warm colour throughout the brown wood. While no floor covering is completely scratch-resistant, the hard wax oil finish of Medio is able to be easily spot-repaired in the event of scuffs or scratches occurring from pets and general wear-and-tear. 

The final outcome incorporates rich, organic European Oak textures and elegant furnishings, giving way to a sleek materials palette and a captivating connection to the outside. The result? An elegant, timeless timber home design with understated modern simplicity.
